What is Hospitality?

Tapping the same question into Google delivers over 3.5 billion search results, a mixture of formal dictionary definitions, ads for online courses and hotel management tips, to agencies selling various event packages and a myriad of job listings

The Oxford Dictionary defines hospitality as ‘the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers’ going on to add ‘the business of entertaining clients, conference delegates, or other official visitors’. But what does this mean in everyday life?

Hospitality is a Sliding Scale

We believe that hospitality should be viewed on a sliding scale that can change depending on the situation.

As an entry level, we have your ‘everyday experiences’. Going to the local coffee shop down the street and having a light-hearted chat with the friendly barista. You feel good, you’ve had a decent conversation and you happily head back home, coffee in hand.

In the middle of the scale, we imagine this to be where your ‘elevated experiences’ sit. Jetting off on holiday and arriving at your hotel, you check in whilst sipping on a complimentary drink, meanwhile, your bags are being taken to your room. You breathe a sigh of relief, the sun is shining and you have nothing to worry about.

But what happens when we want to take it up a notch? Our ‘exquisite experiences’ sit at the highest end of our hospitality scale. Think all-inclusive holiday, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, pre-planned itineraries, dedicated event managers and private transportation in one.

Hospitality is the key to new ideas, new friends, new possibilities. What we take into our lives changes us.
