Cape Destinations: South Africa

While the UK settles into its grey months, South Africa is heading into one of its busiest sporting stretches in years. There's Test cricket over New Year, a run of top-level golf, and a Cricket World Cup on home soil next autumn.

If you're thinking about a club tour, a team trip or an incentive with a sporting heart, now's a good moment to start the conversation.

Why South Africa works so well for groups?

It's an overnight flight from London, and the time difference is only one to two hours, so nobody arrives wrecked. The sport gives everyone a shared reason to go. The rest of the trip, the winelands, the coastline and the long lunches, is what people end up talking about afterwards.

Cricket: a proper winter of it

England's tour starts with a Test at the Wanderers on 17 December, the traditional Boxing Day Test at Centurion, and the New Year's Test at Newlands in Cape Town from 3 to 7 January. Then three ODIs follow, beginning in Paarl on 10 January.

Newlands sits beneath Table Mountain and is one of the best-loved grounds in the game. For a cricket club or a group of friends, it's hard to beat a day there followed by a few days on the Peninsula.

Once the internationals wrap up, the SA20 takes over. The 2026/27 season starts on 17 January, with a Cape Town match on 20 January. That makes it possible to build a two-week cricket itinerary without repeating yourself.

Further ahead, the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup runs from 4 October to 21 November, with eight of its twelve venues in South Africa. The full schedule is due to be unveiled in Cape Town on 1 October, so we'll know more very soon.

Golf: pros' courses, winelands scenery

Golf fans have several options.

• Nedbank Golf Challenge: 3 to 6 December at Gary Player Country Club, Sun City. The event bills itself as Africa's major.

• Alfred Dunhill Championship: 25 to 28 February 2027, at Durban Country Club for the first time.

• Investec South African Open: 4 to 7 March at Stellenbosch Golf Club, followed by the Joburg Open on 11 to 14 March at Randpark.

Stellenbosch is the natural fit for a Cape trip, since it sits in the winelands and is close to Cape Town. A group could watch a day of the tournament, play a round or two themselves, and finish with a long lunch at a wine estate.

Rugby: more about the culture than the calendar

The Springboks head to Australia for the 2027 World Cup, opening against Italy in Adelaide on 3 October. That means fewer home Tests to build around next year.

South African rugby is bigger than any one fixture, though. The Boks have just beaten New Zealand 3–1 in a four-Test series, and the country's rugby culture is as strong as ever. For club groups, that opens up a club match, a coaching session, a braai with a local side, or a stadium day with one of the provincial teams.

Beyond the boundary and the fairway

Every good sports tour needs some room to breathe. In the Cape, that could mean Cape Point, the penguins at Boulders Beach, a day in the winelands, or a coastal drive. For groups with time to spare, a short safari extension turns it into a proper trip.

That's the difference between a tour people enjoy and one they keep talking about for years.
