Running for Cover: How Cape Turned Marathon Day Into a Celebration for Everyone
Every April, London transforms. Streets close, crowds gather, and somewhere between Blackheath and The Mall, over 50,000 people push themselves to the limit in one of the world's most iconic sporting events. The TCS London Marathon is more than a race — it's a city-wide celebration. And at Cape, we believe that celebration should extend well beyond the finish line.
London Marathon: A City-Wide Event Like No Other
First held in 1981 and founded by Olympic athletes Chris Brasher and John Disley, the London Marathon has grown from a modest gathering of a few thousand runners into one of the largest sporting events on the planet. Today, it holds its place as one of the six World Marathon Majors, alongside Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin, and Tokyo.
The numbers are staggering. The 2025 edition drew a record-breaking 840,318 ballot applications and saw 56,640 runners cross the finish line on The Mall — setting a new Guinness World Record for the most finishers ever in a single marathon. Nearly 800,000 spectators lined the 26.2-mile route, cheering runners past some of London's most beloved landmarks: the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, and the London Eye.
The event is not just a sporting achievement — it's a force for good. Since 1981, the London Marathon has raised over £1.4 billion for charity, making it the world's largest annual one-day fundraising event. In 2025 alone, runners raised £67 million for charitable causes.
It's the kind of day that brings a whole city together.
But What About the Supporters?
For every runner on the start line, there are family members, friends, and colleagues cheering them on — often waiting for hours in the cold, moving between viewing spots, losing their loved one in a sea of 50,000 costumes and running vests.
Supporting a marathon runner is a marathon in itself.
That's why Cape created Running for Cover — a signature event designed to give supporters somewhere special to be on marathon day.
Running for Cover: A Family Funfair for Marathon Supporters
Running for Cover is a Cape-produced family funfair experience, created specifically for friends and family of London Marathon runners. While their runners took on 26.2 miles of London's streets, supporters could enjoy a vibrant, festive event full of entertainment, food, and fun — making marathon day a full experience for everyone, not just those in running shoes.
The concept was simple but powerful: marathon day should feel like an occasion for all involved. Running for Cover gave supporters a destination — a place to gather, celebrate, and cheer together, rather than navigating the packed streets alone.
London Marathon: A City-Wide Event Like No Other
The London Marathon draws hundreds of thousands of spectators every year, and for many businesses, community groups, and charities, it represents a unique opportunity to connect with audiences in a meaningful, celebratory environment.
At Cape, we specialise in creating bespoke hospitality and event experiences that sit alongside major events — transforming a day out into something truly memorable. Running for Cover was one example of that thinking in action: identifying a gap in the marathon experience and filling it with something genuinely joyful.
